She was the first Democratic presidential candidate since Mondale to lose a county.  I know it isn't the same as Massachusetts, but if the Bay State swung left, I'm surprised that Rhode Island swung as far right as it did.

I was surprised too.  I always thought of Rhode Island as one of the states that would hold out in the event of a massive Republican landslide (alongside NY and Maryland).

RI has a lot of working-class whites, which explains the swing to Trump, as well as why MA and RI split in both 1972 and 1980.

Rhode Island has a lot of swing voters, and they swung hard to Trump.

It just happens to also have, in addition to that big block of swing voters, a ton of Democrats, and almost zero Republicans, so even though it's very swingy it's always solid D.
