What do you think the odds of the democrats taking the "Clinton lost because she was too moderate" meme to far and nominating someone who is so far outside the mainstream that democrats throw away any chance they have at defeating Trump in 2020?

Probably. But Corbyn isn't just bad because he's very far left. He doesn't have the populist fervor that his ideological twin Sanders has, for instance.

Hard to imagine who this would be. Sanders isn't going to run again in 2020. Beyond him, you're looking at figures as obscure as Pramila Jayapal to find full-Corbyn type candidates.

Clinton didn't lose because she's too moderate.

Tulsi Gabbard is the most Corbyn like democrat right now and the chances of her winning the primary are next to none.

Gabbard isn't a lefty at all. She's just a climber who saw an opportunity in Sanders.

Hopefully they'll nominate someone less boring than Corbyn.

The left's last acceptable bigotry still has a lot of fans here on Atlas, it seems.

I'll say it then: Clinton lost in part because she's too moderate. Otherwise progressives would've turned out to vote.

The left is gonna screw this up somehow. We don't need to change our ideas, We just need a likable less scandalous exciting candidate. These people wanna go full single payer and scathe anyone with ties to wall street in some way.

There are no elected national politicians that are ideologically anything similar to Corbyn; even Sanders is miles to the right of him.

If such a politician existed in the US, yeah, it'd be a really dumb idea to go that extreme.  But Sanders/Warren-style populism protecting social security, ending citizens united, railing against the rank corruption of the big banks/corporations is broadly popular among even conservative voters.

The one wrinkle I might make to some of Sanders' proposals is that for things like healthcare, I think you need to be very careful to avoid "sticker shock" with middle class voters vis a vis tax increases.  For instance, instead of moving to single-payer immediately, the US should transition with a robust public option introduced first.

This.

If I would add anything, it's imperative that the Progs successfully shepherd a Populist policy platform out from under the cloud of patronizing mockery of working class America that the Liberals have hung around the Democratic Party. I think that it's *this * reputation that makes so many people skittish about the left. Bernie was a really good start (in his NH stump he had a great spiel about talking to your neighbors about him and his platform irrespective of ideology) but over the next 4 years we're going to have to completely expunge the, "It's simply ludicrous that they never vote in their own self interest" line of thought from the Democratic vocabulary.

I think we pick up some Trump voters and a LOT of did-not-votes from 2016-2020 if we do that.

Fycking re*tard, Corbin may have flaws, but by no ways is he a bigot. If you must talk about a bigot Om the left-wing in U.K. politics, that would be George Galloway.

If they go full Corbyn they should atleast nominate someone likeable like Sanders or Brown. Corbyn would do horrible in an US general election, even if he ditched his more extremist views (mainly on foreign policy) and became more like Sanders. Sherrod Brown would be a decent 2020 Democratic nominee if they want to go to the left imo.

that's what i hate so much about this election.

HRC was so much cooler, closer to the center, more intelligent and more responsible as corbyn.

but the people love panem et circenses.

Corbyn having flaws that is the statement of the century. Corbyn himself may not be a bigot but he is friends with and has give a platform to some utterly vile people and that in my view is nearly as bad.

WHAT???!!! Gabbard is a fairly standard progressive democrat while Corbyn is a far left relic from the days of Militant Tendency. The two are not even remotely comparable.

Why do people think Gabbard is either GOP-lite or so commie weirdo? She seems a bit left/dovish for my tastes (based on what I see on fb) but she could probably make a great President or at least Veep. The only problem is that she is from Hawaii. She would be the biggest thing since Super Bad from Hawaii. But if Palin, from Alaska, could start a movement of violent loons and weirdos that wins Congress, why can't she?

We won't get someone as good as Corbyn in America sadly.

It mystifies me how anyone even someone left wing can think Jeremy Corbyn is a good leader. His leadership is an utter shambles with mind-bogglingly incompetent statements and political stunts turning him into a national laughing stock, lack of message discipline, no economic plan (they were so clueless on this front that even left wing academics like Piketty gave up on them), infighting, anti-Semitism scandals and questions over links to extremists and terrorist groups. This allows Theresa May and the Government to look frankly amazing in comparison. With a non useless Labour party they'd be up the creek without a paddle. Even a lot on the left of the Labour party are starting to see what a catastrophe Corbyn is, a lot of them want to ditch him but are afraid that the parliamentary Labour Party will use the leadership rules to keep a less crazy left wing alternative off the ballot.

I think you need to brush up on British politics because if your solution to the Democratic Party's woes is drafting a privileged, far leftist who's never done a days proper work in his life and who's loyalty to the country can be called into question then god help the Democratic party and be prepared for a Trump landslide. If you don't believe me check out opinion polling where the Tories are up on Labour by huge margins while in government (sitting governments usually poll terriblly mid term and when they don't it strongly indicates they are on course for a landslide re-election) and Corbyn's dire personal approval ratings (the worst for a party leader since polling began).
