Trump won the area outside New York City in New York State by around 10,000 votes. Not only did Trump do very well in upstate New York, but he also won some counties in the New York metro area (Suffolk, Putnam, Orange). In 2012, Obama easily carried New York State outside New York City.

Thank God for New York City.

Did FDR even carry NY outside NYC?  It's been solidly Republican historically but has moderated in recent years.

I don't think FDR did, but Obama did both times, and I think Bill Clinton, Kerry, and Gore did as well (not sure about those last two). I think in terms of recent history it can be thought of as another Rust Belt state like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, except it's obviously not its own state.

Looks like Trump also won LI.  Last time GOP won LI was back in 1988.

What is impressive about this is Trump pulled this while experiencing a negative swing in Westchester County relative to 2012.  The demographic makeup of Southern Westchester County makes it increasingly like NYC much more so than LI.  So level of support Trump go in Update NY North of Westchester must be massive.  This helps to explain how the GOP managed to hold 30 seats in the NY State Senate which was way beyond expectations.

Definitely the worst showing in upstate NY for a Democrat since 1988. Kerry was by far the next worst, and he won upstate, and won 4 more counties upstate.

Some of these may not necessarily be accurate since they aren't fully reported, but some numbers on New York regions.

New York City

Clinton: 1,969,920 (79.1%)
Trump: 461,174 (18.5%)

Long Island

Trump: 603,882 (49.3%)
Clinton: 584,279 (47.7%)

Downstate (LI + NYC + Westchester + Rockland)

Clinton: 2,863,323 (67.9%)
Trump: 1,243,847 (29.5%)

Upstate (Everything else)

Trump: 1,396,723 (49.4%)

I believe FDR never carried his home county (Dutchess).

I one time for work went to the city of Rome, I flew into Syracuse to get there.

City was Trump territory before I knew what Trump territory was. Richest city in the world in its state and the place left you with the impression the City doesn't give a sh**t about the people Upstate.

What's the borough breakdown? I heard Trump won Staten Island big.

He won 57-40 but this was dwarfed by Clinton's margins in every other borough.

I believe the city of Rome is a solidly Republican city due to an Air Force base being located there. I don’t believe any Downstaters, especially the politicians care the slightest bit about Upstate (including Schumer, despite his pandering)

Although Clinton carried upstate New York decisively in her 2006 reelection bid, though that was a Democratic wave year.
