2012:  Neither candidate horrible
2008:  McCain horrible
2004:  Kerry horrible
2000:  Gore horrible
1996:  Dole horrible
1992:  Neither candidate horrible
1988:  Neither candidate horrible

1984:  Mondale horrible
1980:  Neither candidate horrible
1976:  Neither candidate horrible

1972:  McGovern horrible
1968:  Wallace horrible
1964:  Goldwater horrible
1960:  Neither candidate horrible

So I think we've actually had a lot, and I cannot think of an election since 1960 (with 2016 being the exception of course, where both major party candidates have been horrible.
