When was the last presidential election in which even the democrats accepted that the republican candidate was good too and even the republicans accepted that the democratic candidate was good too?

52' and 56' are the only remotely close ones I can think of.

Perhaps 1960? I strongly think that 1940 is a contender as well.

2012:  Neither candidate horrible
2008:  McCain horrible
2004:  Kerry horrible
2000:  Gore horrible
1996:  Dole horrible
1992:  Neither candidate horrible
1988:  Neither candidate horrible

1984:  Mondale horrible
1980:  Neither candidate horrible
1976:  Neither candidate horrible

1972:  McGovern horrible
1968:  Wallace horrible
1964:  Goldwater horrible
1960:  Neither candidate horrible

So I think we've actually had a lot, and I cannot think of an election since 1960 (with 2016 being the exception of course, where both major party candidates have been horrible.

The last good Democratic nominee?

Probably Grover Cleveland.

'56 by far.

EDIT: Nvm, Ike was the last one. Ford was the last reasonable and good man from that side, but he was a terrible candidate.

2000 maybe. 2004 and 2012: Kerry and Romney were flip-floppers. 2008: Obama was just way too good vs McCain. 2016: Hillary is corrupt with her e-mails and Trump is crazy for saying crazing things.

2012. Although I disagreed with Obama's ideological outlook and policies I have always liked him as a person.

1940-1956 had both parties nominating someone who wasn't too crazy.

1960 at the time. 1956 in retrospect.
