If Comey sent that letter to Chaffetz thinking that Chaffetz wouldn't immediately leak and mischaracterize it, then Comey is arguably the dumbest man in Washington.

1. I don't think the substance of the investigation matters all that much, so much as that this is going to be a terrible news cycle for Clinton.  The question is how long that terrible news cycle can last, or whether it will die out for lack of oxygen.  Voters often vote based on how they feel, not based on the particulars of what's happening -- especially when it comes to evaluating something vague like "honesty."

2. Unless there's something particular and Clinton-related that comes out of this, I think this will be a knock, but probably nothing near a silver bullet.

3. I think a lot of people in this thread are being a little ridiculous about the extent we should expect James Comey to gear his communications entirely based on what impacts they would have on the election.  This is a clarifying status update, which is totally appropriate considering his role.  Let's not be Trump-y about this.

No we aren't being ridiculous.

Go read his letter and then go read what they are saying off the record.

And for those saying this won't hurt her, that is absurd. She will most definitely still win, but if this sucks the enthusiasm out of some people to go vote and/or changes some minds, then all those sweeping gains we were looking primed to get are in danger.
I'll grant that, but I am hating how everyone is freaking out how she will automatically lose because of this.

If anything im freaking out over how low her mandate will be now....
mandates are meaningless

If anything, the idea of a close race from this will bring out more Clinton supporters who thought she would easily win. Classic Atlas over reaction to Comey making sure the FBI was not giving false statements when they said they had gone through all devices.

It's Friday afternoon, no one outside of the hyper political bubble we inhabit is paying attention.

i blame trump hack chaffetz and not comey.

comey tries to look neutral....and reports without looking at the calendar.

new trump groupie chaffetz interprets it in his own way.

And the rest of us are at work still, it's only 2:42 east coast time.

Quite the opposite--I'm washing my hands of this country, and the campaign, and there are many others that are likely to do the same.

This is really sad, it's a shame that the Democrats didn't go with Sanders.

This will hopefully be out of the headlines in about an hour. I predict minimal damage.

Well this really has sealed Comey's fate once the election is over.

He has to go......complete and utter hack.

Comey has to do his job. He's an FBI Director, he can't play politics. However, regardless of who wins, he won't be there in 2017.

Trump grabbed pussies and it moved the polls just a couple points. This might move the polls a little bit more, only because Clinton is near maxed out already. Still, Clinton will come out of this ahead by 2-3 points as a worst case scenario. She still wins PA, MI and WI and thus the election. Even Florida could be doable with those numbers.

And a lot depends if this is the last big story of this election or not. If so, maybe we should expect a close Clinton win. If Trump does something else stupid, or a video gets released, we are likely back to where we are today.

All these FBI leaks to Pete Williams show that Comey probably was politically ignorant of the political consequences of this.

I did.  In the context of his role as an investigator, the message serves to clarify the status of the investigation.  You're basically asking him to specifically mention one person who is/was a subject of the investigation, and whether or not those emails relate to her, because it's politically impactful.  His job as investigator is not to tailor his communications based on political impact.  And if you think FBI investigation status updates generally go into that level of detail, I suggest you go read other FBI investigation status updates.

E-mails are not from Clinton, which means this is a huge nothingburger.
