Well we know things are bad when the Germans and Italians come together to elect a "strong" leader.

I'm Italian and fairly ill-disposed towards Snowguy, yet I'm not offended by this.

Although it's worth noting that Mussolini was never "elected" to power (even in the faint parliamentary sense in which Hitler was "elected"). The fascists in alliance with other right-leaning parties only won 19% in the last free Italian elections in 1921. Then Mussolini staged a quasi-coup and bullied the King into appointing him. Only after he had all but concentrated political power, he organized sham "elections" that the PNF won easily.

Just sayin'. Wink

Hitler certainly did not come to power via parliamentary election. Parliamentary government was suspended in 1930 and he was effectively (at least at the beginning) a presidential chancellor, just like Bruning and von Papen.

It probably wasn't but maybe if it was serious, it would dog whistly like how people like to say all organized labor has organized crime ties. I can say these things because I am half Italian and half Anglo-Saxon. Now you must ask yourself which part of this is serious.

Hey, I hate people named Matteo Renzi and François Hollande as much as every patriotic American, but implying they are dictators is a bit much.

Angela Merkel doesn't sound very foreign. While Schroder would have been a better example, he's less known. Therefore, for a sarcastic race baiting post, Hollande makes the most sense.

Well that's because so many Americans have German ancestry. Tongue

It's not a good comment, because it could easily be construed that way,  but otherwise I think the intention was harmless.
