Massive freedom places for the most part.  College towns such as Madison, Wisconsin and Iowa City, Iowa (my birthplace) are filled with good politics, good food, cultural attractions, and lots of smart people, but without the hustle and bustle of huge cities.

Generally freedom places, but can get a little too libertine (if you're young) or twee (if you're not).

The ones that don't hate America like Missoula, Grand Forks, South Bend, Fort Collins, Lexington, etc. are great. The America-hating towns like Berkeley, Eugene, Boulder, etc. are awful.

Great, for reasons entirely unrelated to politics.

FTR, Atlas and the nerdy friend circles it is linked to are the only places where people judge places on their politics.

I'm curious as to how you make this determination.

(Almost) all college towns are freedom towns.*

*Does not include those in states touching the pacific ocean which have a tendency to be cultural wastelands

Politics and culture both in and around town played a role in the ones that I listed. I also college towns that feel a bit more isolated, which is why Missoula and Grand Forks came to mind.

Here at least they definitely need to be avoided by all decent people during Fresher's Week.

SEC college towns are awesome!

Say one bad thing about Gainesville, Athens, Columbia SC, Knoxville, Nashville, Lexington, Columbia MO, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Starkville, Oxford, Baton Rouge, Fayetteville, or College Station!!

The best of everything (I rather like a good chunk of conservative college towns too...Provo not accepted).

None of the annoyances and bustle of cities, just enough excitement in the town that rural areas don't have (second best), and the antithesis of suburbs (the nadir).

The best is Berkeley by far and f*&( you for thinking otherwise.

Other great ones are: Santa Cruz, Saint Babs, Arcata, Bend, Blacksburg, Asheville, Savannah

Sure there're duds like: Palo Alto, Lexington, or Irvine...but those are far and few in-between.

Freedom towns, though I'm biased because I live in one.

Awesome places from my experiences. I'll consider myself extremely lucky if I get to spend part of my adult life in Berkeley.

You'd love the city council meetings. It's like seeing a Monty Python skit go horribly wrong every Tuesday.

I like 'em, although I don't miss some of the bullsh**t that comes with being around a ton of undergraduates at bars and nightlife venues.

I'm just curious, how does Eugene hate America but Missoula doesn't?  Missoula sure liked itself some Ralph Nader for a town that doesn't hate America.

How long ago did you go? Most of the ones these past few years have been hilarious trainwrecks (well, not every week but every month there's always the one).

Bates is still terrible though.
