An economic recession in late July occurs. Unemployment goes up to ~8.5% as inflation increases and the stock market collapsed. A number of Senate Democrats, including Al Franken, Ron Wyden, Dick Durbin, Chris Coons, Mark Warner, and Tom Carper, distance themselves from Clinton by attempting to pass major pieces of economic reform that is otherwise mostly supported by Republicans. They also endorse other Congressional candidates like Mark Begich, who successfully defeats Palin, who defeated Sullivan in the primary with the help of the Tea Party and a corruption scandal against Sullivan. However, despite the self-named Reform Democrats' success, other than them and their candidates, the Democrats suffer devastating losses, including Chris Dudley defeating Merkley narrowly, Heather Wilson defeating Tom Udall, Donnalee Lozeau's easy defeat of Jeanne Shaheen, Brian Calley's victory, and the like.

Not that hard

GOP wave in 2018, Recession in 2019, Police and Inner city  relations break down even more, Foreign Policy is a disaster, and then a primary challenge. Right now i see the first two happen.
