Louisiana takes over the #1 spot!!!

It's always competitive among the usual suspects.

The top 7:

Louisiana 36.2%
Alabama 35.6
Mississippi 35.6
West Virginia 35.6
Kentucky 34.6
Arkansas 34.5
Kansas 34.2

Kansas and Kentucky were the only two states that had increases (outside of the MOE), and Kansas is really the only new face among fat states--good work Gov Sam Fatback!

At the other end:

Colorado 20.2
DC 22.1
Hawaii 22.7
Montana 23.6
California 24.2
Massachusetts 24.3
Utah 24.5

Four states actually had decreases in obesity--Minnesota, Montana, Ohio, and New York, the first time since 2010 that any state had a decrease.  Great work Michelle!

WV had the most obese white people (by a hefty margin) while Arkansas had the most obese black people (by a much more narrow margin).

WV and Mississippi dominated the diabetes and hypertension rankings going 1-2 in both.

Full numbers and pretty maps are here:

Colorado always seems to have the lowest obesity rate, is this because its hard to breath at high altitudes if you're obese? Or is it because the natural scenery is so fantastic that everyone's out walking and jogging, etc. while AR/LA/MS have 92 degree heat and terrible humidity and you can't go outside for several months each year.

Utah is so high because we Mormons don't drink alcohol, and we're theoretically not supposed to eat too much meat (though we do have a lot of meat anyway), and we hike a lot.

Otherwise, we're as fat as anyone else.

I'm sure there is a considerable correlation between education (and income) and obesity.  Also, there is probably some self-selection and many who are dedicated to hiking or skiing gravitate to Colorado.  I'm surprise all the marijuana isn't taking it's toll on Colorado, though maybe the munchies are a myth.  And of course, while much of the food in the South, especially LA, is delicious, it frequently involves sticks of butter or deep frying.

The munchies are not myth, but the fat, lazy guy in the basement watching cartoons and giggling is.  Well, not myth, they do exist, but their actions have little to do with weed.  They would be fat and lazy in the basement watching cartoons with or without weed.

Marijuana users are thinner than nonusers.  link
