I personally think they should have gone back a bit further. While the 1980 election did find a seven point gap between the actual results and the polling, if they went back to 1936 they would find an even larger 12 point gap^[1][2].

In all seriousness though, a better reason to doubt the polls is that we are still roughly three months out and things change. Relying on a 36 year old election is stupid. It is true that those polls were wrong, but that seven point swing could make it a Clinton +13 race or a Trump +1^[3]. Also, if you narrow your search down to the past 20 years/5 elections (I think that's fair), you find the largest error is only 4% and the average is 3%^[1][2].

What If Only Taxpayers Voted? - Electoral Map (2012)

The argument they make is that if only taxpayers had voted, Romney would have won 441-97.

1) Everyone pays taxes. I don't care if you are a billionare or someone supported by the government. If you go out and buy anything you are paying taxes.

2) The source for the image is CNN's exit polls. Ignoring that r/the_donald spends roughly 70% of their time arguing that the MSM is corrupt and can't be used for anything because of it's bias, there was no question in 2012 asking if someone does or does not pay taxes. In fact, I found it very simple to go to CNN's free, open to everyone exit polls, search for the word "tax", and find that the only questions with that word were:

"Biggest Economic Problem Facing People Like You" (taxes was an answer)

"Income Tax Rates Should Be..."

and "Should Taxes Be Raised To Help Cut Deficit?"

Not only that, but in 2012, not every state was polled for exits. They were in 2008 and, once again, no question pertaining to wether or not someone pays taxes.


Edit: as someone else pointed out, the graphic used is just a map of only the white vote ripped from a Buzzfeed article.

Actually, looking at the comments somebody pointed out that's actually the map of only white people voted. This was pointed out, but another commenter said that it's the same thing, which is basically saying only white people pay taxes.
