Did anyone tell him that we don't call democratic governments "regimes"?  Or perhaps he knew that and made a not-so-veiled threat that he would install a "regime" if elected?

Boy am I glad his path to the presidency is all but foreclosed.  He seems to be getting scarier by the day.

Regime is actually a standard, non-pejorative term in political science. But Trump almost certainly doesn't know that.

This was either a failed attempt at using 'big words' to sound educated, or he knew and meant exactly what he was saying.

...Wow. Does he know what "regime change" means? That's pretty drastic.

For those who aren't familiar with the term: a regime change is a change in the fundamental rules and institutions in a state. Regime change is often a result of a revolution (e.g. the Cuban Revolution), a coup (e.g. Thailand in 2014), or an outside force (e.g. the US invasion of Iraq). A regime change in the US would entail fundamental changes to the Constitution, or even the replacement of the Constitution altogether.

I don't think he meant overthrow the entire system of government. To me at least it sounded like overthrowing the current 'crooked' political system and government.

If we're being super technical, it's not an incorrect use of the word, but the word does have a certain history and.conotations, as evergreenarbor explained. The fact that he said "peaceful" (probably) indicates that Trump even knows that.

So, the election in November is to Trump, assuming he wins, "peaceful regime change." But if Clinton wins, then the election will be rigged and invalid. So, essentially, our entire system as it exists today is equivalent to a rigged, totalitarian system composed of Wall Street financiers, a political class, and a liberal media. Assuming one subscribes to this interpretation of modern America, on what basis should this attempt at "peaceful regime change" not turn into outright "regime change"?

Don't you mean radical right?  Trump hasn't really talked about "class warfare", and the other concepts are no less familiar to fascist takeovers of government.

Yeah, this is pretty standard right-populist/quasi-fascist rhetoric.

Meh, I think you can call pretty much institutional leadership a regime. I've said "Bush Regime," "Clinton Regime" and "Reagan Regime" before, just to refer to the overall political psyche of the eras they ruled.

It's incorrect in the formal sense, but common. (Common usage tends to reverse "government" and "regime".)

Rush Limbaugh has been calling the Obama administration "the regime" to great (and hilarious) effect since 2009.  It makes it sound like some tin-pot dictatorship of Latin America.

The small part that I watched contained him repeatedly mispronouncing "says". He kept rhyming it with "bays."

The teleprompter was obviously being sarcastic.

Attacking Trump on this would be a double standard, given the "Regime change starts at home." anti-war slogan.

Once again, the fake billionaire has either no clue what he’s talking about or he’s simply mentally-ill. Probably both. That he calls the democratically elected government of his own country a “regime” is a disgrace. I never heard something similar, not even during W’s term. The Trumpster continues his dirty campaign against the president.

This might be the biggest stretch I've seen by the left so far this election.

LOL, right, I keep forgetting you think the GOP is to the left of the Democratic Party on economics and class issues.  Pass the pipe, brotha.

Thank you for acknowledging the fact that people on this forum continue to deny in their self-righteous battle to be 'the most left-wing' poster.

There's no vice in denying something demonstrably false.
