Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't every month in 2016 been the warmest in recorded history? E.g. we've had the warmest January in recorded history, warmest February in recorded history...

I will say part of it is due to the strongest El Nino on record (the fact that it lasted two years worsened the situation) so next year -should- be slightly cooler, but it's still a disturbing climate trend regardless, especially living in the southeast.
