With Bush's flawed economic record, the Republicans criticize Lewis as being too far to the left, though the campaign avoids any attempt to criticize him personally.  Perot is helped both by the reticence of many Democrats to support a very liberal black, and by the lack of a clear positive message from the Republicans.  On the other hand, Bush gains votes from those who most fear a black president, despite his own denunciations of racism.
