I've actually been thinking about changing my display name to avoid confusion, but I don't know what to change it to.

My very tentative hypothesis is that there are so disproportionately many LGBT people in general on this forum (and, now that I think about it, on other online forums I've been a part of) because it's easier to find community and interaction here for LGBT folks than it is in the typical places people go for community in unfortunately still not very trans and gay friendly America (churches, spin class, etc).

I imagine that if you are a trans person in an ignorant place you can be very skitty when it comes to going out around town and interacting with people, and that it's easier/safer to talk to people about your passions online.

Maybe, but I also think it's because they vastly tend to skew young.

That's true, but if we took Atlas as a representative sample, 50% of people would be LGBTQ and there'd be exponentially more transpeople than official population statistics.  In other words, I don't think the atlas forum demographic percentages for LGBTQ just match the percentages for millennials/Gen Z - I think they greatly exceed them.

I think you might be on to something. I've been involved with a few online communities, and pretty much all of them were disproportionately LGBT.
