Just a quick question, why did these people start a civil war? Could they not wait three years until the election?

Well we dont really know if this is a full 'civil war'.

I suppose I'm overreacting. I just don't want this to become another Syria.

Do we even know yet what the motivations of this coup are?

Do we even know yet what the motivations of this coup are?

Yes. They listed them at the start. They want to basically 'restore' (in quotes because its debatable whether it really existed ever) liberal, secular, democracy.

They feel that the current administration is too authoritarian and too islamic and they need to be removed by the...traditional Turkish method.

Well, that what they say their motivation is…doesn't necessarily mean it's their real motivation.

Yeah, literally every movement in the world says they support democracy, from Nelson Mandela on one side to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on the other.

Historically that has been the role the Turkish military has played, so given the historical significance, I would say its pretty believable.

The Turkish military has never been in favour of anything that could be called democracy without vicious irony.

The general gist of what Erdogan is saying is that he wants to hang everyone involved and intends to make sure that this happens.

Erdogan may have allowed this to happen, in order to purge the military and make a grab for absolute power.

Erdogan in his impromptu press conference called the coup "a gift from God" and plans "a cleansing" of the army, in other words, a purge

If the coup fails, it will illustrate exactly why it should have succeeded.

That's the realization that's come to me in the past hour or so. It makes sense.

If the rest of the military realizes it, and sees this as their last chance, could it turn the tide?
