Pence could put Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania to the Trump campaign. He's a soothing Midwesterner, my type of politician.

Most places I've read have emphasized the word "signaled"

I can see Pence's appeal as a Pres nominee, honestly, but what does he bring to the ticket really? He's dull and a social archconservative. Doesn't make a ton of sense

Um, yeah, Michigan is near to Indiana. He plays well in that media market.

He appeals to white and black evangelicals.

How did Paul Ryan play in Wisconsin or the rest of the Midwest?

He's essentially the safe pick. Much like Kaine is for Hillary.

Trump seems to be doubling down on the Republican base rather than attempt any sort of outreach. Hard to see that as a winning strategy.

Like Biden to Obama in 2008, Pence neither helps nor hurts the ticket. Sometimes, those sort of picks work for a candidate.

Good way to give the LGBT vote over to Clinton

But Donald is great with the gays, and the blacks, and the hispanics, and the women, and the etc.

Just like Paul Ryan really swung Wisconsin over to Romney? I get that you're making a point about his midwestern-ness, but Pence isn't that appealing to Mich., Ohio, and certainly Penn. swing voters to counter any negative feelings about trump. From my Illinois & Michigan perspective, we certainly don't look to Indiana and start chanting "one of us, one of us."

I would be willing to say though that in the event of a Hillary landslide where states like NC, Arizona, and Georgia might flip, Indiana is going to be pretty solidly Republican.

Lol, he could put Indiana in play if you're not careful. He's a toxic governor. So much for Trump being "friendly" with the LGBT community.

trump's best available option probably was a low risk-low reward, "do no damage" pick like Pence, but I think there is a slightly bigger risk than say Biden was due to Pence's untested national media experience and how socially conservative he is. I doubt he is going to turn into Sarah Palin, but the country is going in such a direction that I don't think that too many people will fall in love with the guy.

Sorry, man. You're probably right. However, Ryan was controlled by the Romney inner circle. He could have stood out in the election.

Trump can't win without conservative enthusiasm.  A former right-wing radio jock turned TEA Party darling is probably necessary.
