Reports are swirling that gop rules committee is trying to unbind delegates to vote their conscience.  What would be the repercussions if that happened? Can Trump run third party and win?

If the RNC wants Cleveland to turn into Mad Max Land after the imminent riots from trump supporters, trump protesters, and people caught in the middle, then yes.

That has about much a chance of succeeding as carrying guns on the convention floor.

Which is to say, nil.

Trump supporters are going to riot when they lose? Gosh. That means we should totally cave to them.

No, that's what a thug does. Threaten others. What do you do with thugs? You shoot them.

I doubt it. I don't think anti-Trump delegates have the numbers.

No not at all. That would be unfair to change the rules and be bad for part unity

If they prove any less cowardly than the FBI, heads will roll. I'm a click away from booking a train at all times

Trump's only got 800 loyal delegates, not much more than Cruz.  If the delegates get released on a free vote, it will be the best convention in a long, long time.

Well they have their casus belli for a convention coup if the NYT article that claims Trump might not serve if elected is true

Trump will appear to be in trouble, but he'll pull out a variation on the trick Cleavon Little  used to get out of a sticky situation in "Blazing Saddles".  While at the podium, he'll put a gun under his chin and using a wacky Trump impersonation will act as if a Mexican-Muslim has taken him hostage.  After a brief struggle with himself, he'll jump up and proclaim that he has freed himself from his would be captor.  Of course, the delegates will be emotionally overcome by his heroics and will nominate him by acclamation.

If this trashy guy also brings along all the junk scattered around his home (behind him in the image) to his "riot at the National Convention," he can use it to construct a huge barricade.

PS: What are the odds that this guy could be Ljube or Seriously from our forum ?

I'm putting the chances of a successful convention coup at around 15%, which is astonishingly high in the modern era of conventions. I think most of the supposedly in-play delegates are coming to the convention looking to avoid drama, but given that Trump's campaign is in a state of near-constant meltdown, I can't rule a coup out.

They would have to kill him (and even that would cost them voters). A coup would result in a devastating net-loss in the general.

As par this article is a coup against Trump at convention more likely?

http://www.wsj.com/articles/anti-donald-trump-forces-see-convention-coup-as-within-reach-1467839099

The whole judge thing, his response to the FBI investigation into Hillary's email, and his tense meeting this morning with Republicans on Capitol Hill where he doubled down on his inter-party attack's makes me think like it's more possible to previously before.

Not to mention the fact that most GOP strategists are dismayed that he has completely neglected mechanics of campaigning such as building a field program or a finance operation. However, it's not only establishment types that are sharing all of these concerns but rank and file delegates and activists as well. Even those who supported Trump are starting to have buyer's remorse.

Cruz allies are also apparently working to undermine Trump at the convention.

Does anyone think these efforts will be sucessful? Given how disorganized the Trump camp is if the Never Trump people gather serious steam going into the convention it's hard to see what stops them.

If they get a conscience vote and Trump fails on the first ballot, even if he's close, it's game on.

The majority of the pre-Trump GOP would like to see it happen, but they are (rightly) afraid of the fallout on downballot races.

If I were an elected Republican running in a tight race, I'd be looking to find ways to dodge the question and change the topic as soon as I mention that I was "voting Republican" in November, or something like that.  It's the path of least resistance.  The #NeverTrumpers have signed their death warrant in politics; if Hillary is elected, they will be blamed for every distasteful liberal initiative she pushes through.
