4 years, in this case, is not so much a presidential term as the minimal period necessary for a nuclear fallout over the US to stop making life very hard here, south of the border. I wouldn't bother that much in the US: chances of anybody surviving a Trump presidency are pretty slim, in any case.

Since North Dakota will go Republican, and Sandoval and Heller will probably trade jobs, all Democrats have to do is pick up Arizona if Flake retires and have Doggett or someone similar beat Cruz. Then, Matheson could beat Morgan Philpot or Greg Hughes for the Senate.

That's a total of D+2. +Utah, Arizona, Texas; - North Dakota

As long as Toomey, Kirk, Johnson, Heck, Portman, and DeSantis all lose/McGinty, Duckworth, Feingold, Masto, Strickland, and Murphy all win, we could have a Democratic Senate from 2017 to 2021. Furthermore, only Feingold and McGinty have to win to get a 50-50 Senate if it's D+2 in 2018.

If Hillary wins and takes a majority in the senate with her, the dems will be proclaimed to have a permanent majority. Invisible Obama will proclaim in bold terms that Jeff Flake is dead and Heidi Heitkamp is Safe. IceSpear will declare that Bob Casey will win 65-35. Jfern will simultaneously call for progressive primary challengers to all dems, saying "you can't go too liberal!!!!". OC will declare his support for a Julian Castro Senate run. Then the actual 2018 will happen, Republicans will gain 6 or 7 or 8 seats (with Flake winning and Heitkamp losing of course), and everyone will be brought firmly back down to earth.

If Hillary wins but the R's still hold the senate majority, the senate and house will be declared Safe R until the end of the Hillary presidency: "America is Sexist! They won't do a thing for Hillary while she's in office", and other silly comments. I'd almost hope for her to get a 2020-22 senate majority just to silence the comments.

If Trump wins, the democratic party will be declared to be dead! Dead I tell you! Dead!: "If they couldn't beat Trump who can they beat?". Then the laughter will begin whenever dems have a good year again, whether that's 2018 or 2020.
