Because anyone but an obnoxiously rabid and extreme social conservative is acceptable to some Republicans (who then ironically don't hold Republicans who hold moderate fiscal views out of the party mainstream to be "RINOs").

I keep reading this but I don't understand what you're trying to say.

Mark Kirk has an economically conservative, pro-business voting record that fits in well with his party, but because he supports gay people's right to get married and disagrees with the party on abortion, he's a "RINO" in the eyes of the base.

Then Rick Santorum has an economic voting record that includes voting against free trade, supporting unions and voicing support for increased regulation that puts him way out of the mainstream of his GOP colleagues, but because he REALLY doesn't want gay people getting married and shouts about God a bunch, he's a "true conservative."  It's nonsensical that we let social conservatives dictate who's a "RINO" even if they disagree with the party's stances on several things, too.
