In a round rejection of the Bush years, former Governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson led a libertarian campaign against the "establishment" and "authoritarian" candidacies of Senator John McCain and Governor Mike Huckabee. Meanwhile, Senator Hillary Clinton of New York would seek to re-enter the White House, easily beating Senator John Edwards for the nomination despite his populist campaign. Businessman Donald Trump, denouncing the twin "globalist, neo-liberal, open borders" candidacies of Clinton and Johnson, opted to run a nationalist, conservative third-party campaign against the two major parties.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (Democrat-New York)/Senator Barack H. Obama, Jr. (Democrat-Illinois)

vs.

Former Governor Gary E. Johnson (Republican-New Mexico)/Former Governor William Weld (Republican-New York)

vs.

Businessman Donald J. Trump (Independent-New York)/Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, III (Independent-Alabama)

300: Fmr. Gov. Gary Johnson/Sen. John McCain - 44.4%
235: Sen. Hillary Clinton/Sen. Jay Rockefeller - 39.3%
3: Businessman Donald Trump/Fmr. Sen. Mike Gravel - 23.4%
Ralph Nader/David Cobb - 2.0%
Others - 0.9%

Trump takes votes mostly from Perot types, paleoconservatives, and the Huckabee/Edwards populist types. Johnson builds a stunning coalition, breaking away from the incumbent almost entirely.

The election is closer than in RL. For the first time since George Wallace in 1968 a third party has electoral votes. Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions win the states in the general election that Mike Huckabee won in the Republican primaries. The presence of Weld on the ticket makes the GOP more competitive in New England and they are able to win New Hampshire. Maine's 2nd District is very close and the Democrats only win Massachusetts by 5% due to Weld's home state advantage. In addition Johnson and Weld are able to gain the close states of 2008 RL that went to Obama (i.e Florida and Ohio). New MExico is also much closer than in RL due to Johnson's local popularity but falls short.

Here's my idea of an interesting match-up:
Republican ticket: Governor Gary Johnson (R-NM) / Governor Mark Sandford (R-SC)
Democratic ticket: Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) / Governor Ted Strickland (D-OH)
Independent ticket: Businessman Donald Trump (I-NY) / Columnist Pat Buchanan (R-VA)
Any ideas on what the map would look like?
