Having lived in Sandy Hook, I can definitely understand the cautiousness these days.  The problem is a lot of these schools don't know how to handle these incidents (which happen every year, because, kids) without making assholes of themselves.  This doesn't even look remotely like a firearm.

You can thank the Gun Free Schools Act of 1994 for this lunacy. Automatic permanent expulsion for any student who brings a "weapon" to school, the term "weapon" undefined and left open for interpretation.

I think the rules should be changed.  Obviously, I don't want this five year old bringing a gun to school, but, really, suspended over a watergun?  That's a little extreme.  What's she going to do, kill someone with it?

What the hell has happened to our schools? At this point, I have zero tolerance for zero tolerance policies. They have created a culture of strict non-leniency where administrators basically throw the book at kids for the most petty things ever.

Kids are going to dumb things from time to time, yet they are treating these children like they are full blown adults (and even then I wouldn't advocate for these bs heartless punishments)

Suspension is ridiculous, but it is perfectly within the right of the school to not allow a fake gun, in a school. Saying that, the parents should fight back this suspension.

Not here.  You're free to look through the thread we had here.  I got to page 3 just now and nobody suggested the kid should have been arrested or suspended.  Many of us thought he was a bit daft for bringing a wired device with a clock on it to school, hidden in a backpack, that started beeping in the middle of class....but that's not the same thing at all.

I mean, I wouldn't be too keen on allowing kids to bring toys that look like this to school.  At least it would be worth saving the teachers a few heart attacks.  But even that shouldn't go past the level of temporary conviscation if need be.
