Politico has a few possibilities:

Would any of these resulted in either a contested convention, or a Trump loss of the nomination?  Any others that you can think of?  What about just a slightly different combination of candidates running, or candidates dropping out at different times?  E.g., if the “establishment lane” had been less crowded, or included different people, would that have mattered?

September 7, 1945: Fred Trump dies of a heart attack at 2 PM. That night, he would have conceived Donald John Trump. A bit extreme, but why not?
Fast forward to June 30, 2015. Chris Christie announces his campaign for President.
February 1, 2016: Christie pulls a surprise win in Iowa, 29% to Cruz's 28%. This gives him solid momentum into NH and other early states.
May 3, 2016: With 53% of the vote in for Christie in Indiana, Cruz drops out of the race, and Reince Priebus labels Christie the presumptive nominee.
June 25, 2016: Christie announces his VP pick as John Kasich.
June 26, 2016: Hillary Clinton chooses Tim Kaine as VP.
November 8, 2016: The election occurs. Pennsylvania is still too close to call on Wednesday morning.

Secretary Hillary Clinton (D-NY) / Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) - 265/48.89%
Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) / Governor John Kasich (R-OH) - 253/48.87%
December 13, 2016: The Supreme Court ties, so the election is bound for Congress.
January 6, 2017: Congress selects Chris Christie as President, and Senate selects Tim Kaine as Vice President.
January 20, 2017: "I, Christopher James Christie, do solemnly swear..." Christie states as he is inaugurated.
March 31, 2017: When two recounts match, Christie finally wins Pennsylvania with 57 votes.

Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) / Governor John Kasich (R-OH) - 273/48.87%
Secretary Hillary Clinton (D-NY) / Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) - 265/48.89%
