You don't go from Plains, GA to the White House on kindness. Of course Carter was ambitious, and he knew how to play the political game, but relatively speaking, he was all of the above.

I was surprised only one person said this...I've heard a lot of historians say he was our "nice guy" president. Supposedly, when he was shot, he was concerned about the assassin's safety....
