I don't have a lot of solid thinking on this, but let's speculate. If Trump loses in November, as he is very likely to do, what does the fact of his having been the GOP nominee do to Republican chances in the next few cycles? I don't think it'll hurt among the GOP base, but is there any chance that it poses a persistent threat among independents who might otherwise have been willing to consider Republicans?

That is, in 2020, if the GOP were to nominate a Kasich type, say, would he start in a hole among people who might think, "Wait, the GOP is the party that nominated Donald f***ing Trump, no way!"?
