Ferraro ’92 - Keep the Promise

President Ferraro is facing an uphill battle for re-election. The American economy has begun a slow recovery the economic hardship of the past two years is still fresh in the public’s mind. The president’s perceived weakness in foreign affairs and waffling on the trade issue led to a primary challenge from Ross Perot, a battle that she narrowly won.  The president is promising to end stagnant job growth by signing NAFTA, to cut taxes for the middle class, to pursue peace with the new leadership of the Soviet Union, and to spearhead healthcare and education reform.

Clint for President- Go Ahead, Make America Great Again!

Clint Eastwood emerged early-on as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. Eastwood maintained a considerable lead throughout the primary season but faced a serious challenge from the Buchananite wing of the party in the person of Jesse Helms. Eastwood’s controversial positions on social issues made many traditional Republicans uneasy; Eastwood is an atheist who supports marriage equality, abortion rights, and what he calls ‘common sense gun control’. Nevertheless, his universal name recognition and charisma virtually guaranteed him the nomination. The Eastwood platform calls for cuts in taxes and even bigger cuts in federal spending, free trade without NAFTA, a balanced budget by 1996, and non-intervention abroad; Eastwood does, however, support bringing Western Ukraine and the Baltic States into NATO. Eastwood has chosen the recently re-elected governor of Texas Ron Paul as his vice presidential pick.

Two days.

I may not agree with Eastwood's views on abortion, guns, or (to a lesser extent than the first two) marriage, but I love his views on taxes/spending. He's got my vote.

Abstain.  If the GOP is not conservative, it doesn't deserve my vote.

The campaign of '92 saw two very different candidates compete with two very different electoral strategies. President Ferraro invested heavily in the biggest electoral prizes, spending almost the entire campaign in California, the Midwestern swing states, and New York. Eastwood took a different approach, embarking on an ambitious 50-state campaign, appearing in every state from Alaska to Maine. Although many pundits balked at the idea as outdated, it lent Eastwood an air of energy and vigour that contrasted well with the low-key Ferraro campaign. Ferraro ran an issues-oriented campaign and, as she had done four years earlier, tried to frame her opponent as a political greenhorn. This strategy backfired badly at a time when the voting public was eager for a political outsider to take the reins. Clint Eastwood went on to deliver three knockout debate performances against a president who often seemed tired, bored, or irritated. The slight lead that Eastwood enjoyed expanded to a double digit margin. The president never recovered.

Former Mayor Clint Eastwood/Governor Ron Paul - 486 EV (59.5%)
President Geraldine Ferraro/Vice President Sam Nunn - 52 EV (40.5%)
