Hart clinches the nomination in spite of Walter Mondale, and picks John Glenn as his running mate. John Anderson is frustrated with Reagan's policies and sees them as too conservative. His running mate is Pete McCloskey. The two run as "Independent Republicans".

520: Reagan/Ford
10: Hart/Daschle
8: Anderson/Pressler

Hart campaigns mostly in SD, ND, MN, IA, WI, and CO. He is considered the founder of a "Western New Democrat" wing which will probably rise to power in 1988 or 1992. Anderson, campaigning mostly in New England as a moderate and liberal Republican, takes mostly Democratic votes. However, in the Dakotas his more conservative running-mate seems to take more Republican votes.
