Reagan picks former President Ford as his running mate in 1980. After the decisive victory over President Carter, Reagan’s term only lasts for two months: On March 30, 1981, he gets shot. Once again, Gerald Ford assumes the presidency. He runs again in 1984. Does he win that time?

This time, President Ford is handily reelected, though he slightly underperforms the gipper's real life margins.

President Gerald R. Ford (R-MI)/Vice President George H.W. Bush (R-TX): 517 EV. (57.61%)
Former Vice President Walter F. Mondale (D-MN)/Representative Geraldine Ferraro (D-NY): 21 EV. (40.23%)

535: Ford(MI)/Fenwick(NJ) - 61.6%
3: Mondale(MN)/Washington(DC) - 36.9%

With sympathy votes and a broader coalition, Ford wins re-election handily. It's possible we get Chief Justice Rudy Giuliani or Anthony Kennedy.

Doesn't work, he'd be term limited anyway and unable in '84.

Now if we suppose Carter beats Reagan and Ford actually tried again, that would probably lead to  Ford victory, narrow if Carter's second term pays off, the actual '84 if it doesn't.

Technically, Ford's SCOTUS could rule otherwise, having served 41 months and then 46 months, as the Twenty-Second Amendment's portion about this says:

I discussed that in another tread (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=223879.0). I think Ford would be eligible to run for reelection. However, let’s say the courts rule is allowed to seek a full term.
