I'm against disrespecting English spelling.

I hate British spelling with a passion, but proper nouns ought to be respected (unless they refer to a really really awful person/thing, like Donald Drumpf, Poison Dwarf, Epic Fáil, or Golden Shower).

I prefer British spellings—The Queen's English is best English. Tongue

It's actually quite helpful in determining which posts about British politics written by American posters are worth reading and which aren't.

Its an odd one because the one letter in 'Labour' you definitely don't sound is the 'o'.

I've got no problem with spelling it as Labour. However, get over yourselves on the aluminum/aluminium debate. The British way of spelling isn't "correct", its just one way to do it.

I'm pretty sure I've slipped up a few times on some Britthreads, so I think it would be hypocritical of me to vote HP. Voted FP.

It is the correct spelling for the British Labour Party, though.

Calling it "Labor" would be like if a Brit started talking about the "Farmer-Labour Party of Minnesota".

Or the "Australian Labour Party" when they use the American spelling as well.

They call the GOP, Conservative and the Whigs Liberal Dem. To distinguish from Liberal Dems or Whigs they call the Secular or Left Wing Party Labor

It bothers me much more when Americans spell perfectly good English words incorrectly because they hate America.

But it's the registered name of an official political party. It's different.

I was being hyperbolic obviously, but yeah, it kinda annoys me for some reason. Maybe because I want to be a patriotic 'Murican, or because I'm a mild Anglophobe. Tongue I don't know, it just sounds off. The American way feels more straightforward and authentic.

No I absolutely get that. I just get this condescending feeling from some Brits that say we Americans don't say "aluminium" correctly, and I'm saying that it's correct for the spelling and it's fine that we spell it differently. All power to Labour and that it should never be referred to as the Labor Party.

Even though I've lived here for many years now, I still haven't bothered to learn why the party is "Labor" with no "u" here, when basically every other word is spelled the British way.
