Yes (R), but I could see why someone would say no.

I was looking through some old threads about this issue, and I came across this post (from BRTD of all people):

honestly, I say go ahead.

Social Security privitization benefits young people like me at the expense of the elderly. Normally I'd be unselfish and still oppose it, but since the elderly voted for Bush and the youngest generation against him, I say go ahead. You reap what you sow.

It seems like the Atlas Forum was very pro-privatization back then. I was looking through some threads about this from the mid-2000's, and it seems like the Democrats and Republicans on this forum supported privatization of Social Security. Interesting stuff indeed.

No, but I think the retirement age should absolutely be raised.  If we're indexing minimum wage to inflation (which has been floated, and I'd support), why not index retirement age to life expectancy?

I agree.

I reluctantly support privatization, but maybe raising the retirement age is a good alternative. SS needs to be reformed IMO.

How?
I'd much prefer having social insurance that's government run as long as it was effective and people didn't slip through the cracks but its not an easy transition to make.

This issue pretty much all but died 10 years ago.

Yea, I can't think of any arguments for privatization these days, even with the government debt being high.

First off, as much as I disagree with Murica on a whole lotta' things I respect him for following his communitarian beliefs and included in that is probably no privatization. Listen, I know it's hard to understand, but Communist =/= Fascist, here's something to help:

Indexing the retirement age to life expectancy is a terrible idea, and I don't see how the indexing of minimum wage to inflation justifies it. They're not remotely comparable. Just because life expectancy is going up doesn't mean everyone, particular the poor and those with health problems, can reap the benefits.

No to the OP, and the only "reforms" made to social security should be expanding the benefits of the program.

I've now changed my position on this.

Privatizing Social Security is a dangerous idea.

We should raise the retirement age to 68 and expand the benefits of the program.

No (R)

We as a society should retain forced savings and insurance programs. If we are to have a welfare state to support the destitute, it is reasonable to force those who are able to avoid destitution to save. Furthermore, people generally lack the knowledge or attitude to invest successfully. A government run pension program allows the government to avoid some of the moral hazard that comes with the welfare state, by ensuring those who won't save, or don't have to knowledge to invest will have adequate income in their old age.

Well the reason i called him a fascist is because he believes people who have different opinions then him should be shot.

This, at least in the intermediate term. I support diversifying the trust fund and allowing additional set-asides in private accounts, but not full scale elimination.
