Anti-Gay Activist Group Initiates Ford Boycott

Date Posted 06-01-2005

TUPELO, Miss. — Ford Motor Company's efforts to attract affluent gay buyers by linking donations to gay rights groups with purchases of its vehicles has drawn the ire of an anti-gay organization.

The Tupelo-based conservative Christian group American Family Association is urging a boycott of Ford products. It says 75,446 people had signed a pledge supporting the boycott as of Wednesday.

A statement on the group's Web site, www.BoycottFord.com, accused Ford of extensive promotion of homosexuality.

Some of those advertisements are rather inappropriate... but I suspect that this "boycott" will end up being about as unsucessful as the SBC's boycott of Disney.

Didn't you hear?  They forced Michael Eisner to resign. Tongue

The Fundies should have more respect for savvy marketing practices.

Too bad Ford's mileage sucks. Otherwise I would encourge people to buy Ford.

Wal-Mart.  Boycott them.

I already boycott Ford.  And GM.  You won't find me buying any American car unless it is the Corvette or something over $100,000.  The cheaper cars are complete and utter junk that seems to break once a week.

Ah, the 'Talibangelicals' are at it again. Business is business and a gay's money is just as good as everybody elses

Dave
Business is business and if you advertise yourself as someone's special friend*, you should expect a backlash if that someone has enemies. Just as the people who're staging this boycott should expect their presidential candidate to lose the last Log Cabin Republican votes. And so on at infinitum.

My favourite boycott was Harry Rowohlt's boycott of France during the Mururoa tests. For the duration of the test he smoked his Gauloises without filters.

*Disclaimer: I haven't seen these Ford commercials. I don't know what I'm talking about.

You're an idiot. People voluntarily deciding not to buy something is not 'Talibangelical,' and you can quit using that gay term now.

Actually it's quite an accurate term for Christian fundamentalist nuts.  I expect if they were in a position other than just a small, angry group of nutjobs, they'd probably ban Ford given the choice.  Thus, they're no better than the Taliban.

There is absolutely no indication of such, nor is there any indication of your characterization, not are fundamentalists inherently nuts.

Of course, under the precedent of fascist laws such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, organized boycotts like this could be banned.

Think about it.  Hypothetically speaking, if the AFA actually ran the government (God forbid), I'd be pretty sure they'd actually ban whatever corporations that might conflict with their paranoid agenda of ignorance and hate, rather than just promote ineffective and laughable boycotts.  Sound familiar?  That's right, it's the Taliban.  Hence the name 'Talibangelicals'.  You should be thankful they don't actually run the country (yet), or you'll have much more to worry about than the Civil Rights Act.

I worked for one of the other auto companies, so if Ford wants to advertise their cars as "gay" that's ok with me.

Did you know Ford also supported the Nazi's during WWII?

One article mentioned something about Ford requiring employees to take gay tolorence classes, which is over kill.

I just bought a Toyota last year (40 miles / gallon) and have no intention of buying a new car anytime soon.

Thought that popped into my head.... can you imagine a Big Foot Truck that was pink instead of blue?

No, but people willing to go to such lengths to control how other people choose to live their lives, to no detriment to anyone else is rather extreme, and un-libertarian, I might add, and it's surprising that it doesn't bother you. Especially since these fundamentalists would certainly prefer to have public schools forcibly teach 'creation theory' simply because they themselves hold it in high esteem. They also would like to insert their own personal religious beliefs on others' rights to do things, such as scientists' ability to conduct research on stem cells or people's right to gamble. At the present moment in society, besides the expansion of the federal government and the erosion of civil libeties under the present administration's heavy-handed policies and secretive tactic, this represents the greatest threat to personal liberty coming from the political sphere.

Hit a raw nerve have we? Such reasons for a boycott are founded on their inherent intolerance and bigotry

I use the term 'Talibangelical', aptly, to distinguish extreme right wing fundamentalist, and reactionary, Christian wing nuts from those Christians (like myself), who cherish compassion, tolerance, social justice, and the Social Gospel (i.e. Christ's outreach to the poor) - the latter of which right-wing fundamentalism emerged to oppose

Neverthless, please explain as to how the term 'Talibangelical' is a gay term. I'd so much like you to enlighten me on that one

For record, my disdain for the 'Talibangelicals' is matched by an equally vociferous disdain for extreme secularists. Could I be any fairer than that?

During WWII? No, I don't think so. In the late 20s and early 30s? That has been claimed ever since those days, and I haven't got the slightest clue whether it's true. Henry Ford was an antisemite at the time, that much is beyond doubt.
