The aged defense secretary has served under 4 administrations as well as having been elected in his own right. In 2008, with more experience than some potential challengers combined, having transformed the military into a 21st-century fighting force, executed two successful wars, and initiated his own doctrine, could the self-deprecating Rumsfeld be plotting to succeed the throne?

Rumsfeld is the straight talker, not McCain, and would be a refreshing Presidential candidate.  Like McCain, however, he's too old to run as it is, and will be positively ancient by '08.

Thank God, Jehovah, Allah, Zeus, Buddha, Vishnu, and any other diety or religious figure you care to mention that this will never happen.  This idiot should have been fired at least three years ago, but only Bush's misplaced loyalty kept him from doing it.  Not that he didn't have some good ideas about how our military needs reform, but he failed to see that they were totally inapplicable for the situation we would face in Iraq.  You can destroy eney armies much better with the type of lean and mean military he has promoted, but an occupation force needs boots on the ground that his plans failed to provide for.  Worse, he seems to still not realize that it was his arrogance and mistakes that made the occupation longer, bloodier, and costlier than it should have been.

He's got a few powerful skeletons in his closet.
Abstaining on the 1964 Civil Rights Act, for one.

In many respects, Rumsfeld has been a great public servant.

A President?  No way.

If by 2008 we are completley out of Iraq, & Iraq is a roaring Democrocy, they have stopped killing the hell outta each other, the WMD's turned up somehow & we found out at trial that Saddam was just about to nuke the U.S before the invasion, Rumsfeld wins if he runs.  Any of those things don't happen, then no & considering all of those things won't happen well...

If the war on terror never occurred, he would be a decent choice for a potential candidate.  However, due to the war, there is too much ammo which can be used against him.

I'm a fairly regular reader of the Rapid City Journal, and I've seen no mention of riots, which makes me doubtful.

Having spent a good amount of time in downtown Rapid City, the idea of riots there is pretty amusing. It's oftentimes pretty deserted.

I basically agree with Ernest that Rummy is a stubborn ideological type who has his own ideas about how things should be and isn't going to let facts get in his way.  His ideas appeal to Bush, as they are "revolutionary" and this is appealing to Bush.  Everything Bush does has to be some kind of damn revolution.  The Bolsheviks had a revolution too, ya know Tongue .

He'd not make a good President at all.

Considering Bob Byrd voted against the act, I doubt it will be an issue.

The Iraq was has been very, very badly run.

The US had, vis a vie Iraq, crushing firepower, vast technological superiority, and infinitely superior training and personnel - there was really no way to "lose" per se...

But lets face it, wars of liberation are very very often followed by civil wars. - The chaos in Iraq was certainly very very likely..

Rumsfeld for President..?   ... ah.... no....

I've long criticized Rumsfeld's program of "Defense Transformation".  He wouldn't have been my pick, and his first Quadrennial Defense Review, where he suggested the elimination of aircraft carriers among other nonsense confirmed my suspicions.

Considering that he's not running, doesn't matter.
