Mr. Morden wrote everything beyond this line:

Will update list as appropriate--last update = November 3

OK, by popular demand, I’ve tried compiling all the “major” current or former Republican officeholders not voting for Trump.  I’m only including people who are either current or former members of Congress, governors, or federal Cabinet officials (I guess Zoellick wasn’t technically a Cabinet official, but close enough).  I’m not including Lt. Governors or other state cabinet officials, nor state legislators or mayors.  Also not counting people who have been or currently are nominees for major office but never made it, like Rob McKenna.  Adding those people in would make it way too difficult to track, especially since in most cases, state legislators’ presidential preferences aren’t going to be readily reported in the media.

I’m also not including staffers and political aides like Mark Salter, or media people like Kristol.  This is just politicians.  If I listed every conservative media personality or prominent political aide or former assistant Secretary of such-and-such, the list would grow by something like 200 names.

Some of this is also open to interpretation, because some folks are trying to split hairs to a ridiculous extent, like saying “I’ll support but not endorse”.  Most aren’t actually splitting hairs in quite such a ludicrous manner, but because some are, one has to scrutinize the wording everyone uses, and I’ve tried to be fair in categorizing people.  I’m assuming, for example, that if someone says they won’t support Trump, that means they won’t vote for him, unless they’re obviously trying to phrase it in a confusing manner.  That said, let me know if you disagree with someone being included on the list.

I’m pretty sure he’s #NeverTrump, and everyone seems to include him on their list, but I can’t actually find the original quote where he says he won’t support him in the GE
Rep. Justin Amash (MI)

Say they won’t support Trump unless he transforms his candidacy pretty significantly, in a way that’s pretty unlikely to happen (e.g., some say that if he backs away from the Muslim ban, or mass deportation, or stops insulting people, then they might back him)
former Rep. Tom DeLay (TX)
Sen. Jeff Flake (AZ)
Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX)
Gov. John Kasich (OH)
Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL)
former Gov. George Pataki (NY)
former Rep. Joe Scarborough (FL)

As far as I can tell, they’ve indicated that they’re not going to publicly comment on who they support for the duration of the campaign
former Pres. George H.W. Bush
former Pres. George W. Bush
Gov. Larry Hogan (MD)
Rep. Kay Granger (TX)
former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger
Gov. Bruce Rauner (IL)
former Secretary of State George Schultz
Gov. Rick Snyder (MI)
Rep. Fred Upton (MI)

There are of course, many more people who have not *yet* indicated how they’ll be voting in November, but unlike the Bushes, they’re open to expressing their presidential preference at some point during the campaign.  I’m not tracking everyone in that category, as it’s a very long list.  It would be great if some media organization went through every member of Congress and detailed which ones haven’t yet endorsed Trump, or fall in different categories like “endorse with conditions”, etc., but I haven’t seen anyone do that.

I was sore for months about Trump, but I'm over it, and the establishment needs to get over it too.

I'd like to keep the possibility of actual conservative governance sometime in the future open, thank you very much.

Bad news, little buddy. By the time President Hillary leaves office in 2024, it will be demographically impossible for a Republican to win the presidency. Hey, at least you got to virtue signal to all of your friends that you aren't a nasty racist like those Trump supporters.

Naaah. By 2020, or 2024, or 2028, or whenever it is that the Democrats get unpopular -- because it'll happen eventually -- enough minorities will vote for us that we will win anyway (just like they've always eventually done for the entire history of the Republican Party), so long as we have not been overtaken by the Trumpistas (in which case we will be unable to win anything until a reconquista is completed). In the meantime under a Hillary Presidency, by continuing to win congressional and statewide elections, especially during midterms, whose design is skewed in our favor, we can prevent Hillary/her successors from doing much of anything except through executive order (including if necessary keeping SCOTUS seats open for years on end).

It is worthwhile for us conservatives to look to our movement's past in times like these. For years and years, the Republican Party was not monolithically conservative. Neither party was cleanly sliced up by ideology. Conservatives eventually won the day.

Parties are collections of interests. The menace of communism united religious, business, ideological, patriotic, and defense interests to defend the philosophy our country is built upon. American conservatism is the product of that unity. Unfortunately, the unity of our interests are coming apart at the seams. The hardcore conservatives spend much of their time fighting business and defense interests as if they're opponents of fiscal stability. Business interests fire back at the ideologues. A large segment of what we once thought of as religious interests are becoming more characterized by their populism and class than by faith. Deeply patriotic individuals get angry with business and defense interests as well.

What conservative can win? George W. Bush won as an American conservative. He was a tax-cutting, pro-military evangelical who wasn't afraid defend our country's citizens, morals, and honor. He united the far flung interests that make American conservatism a force to be reckoned with.

But we're a ways away from being able to make our party the vehicle of American conservatism. Buckley always said the nature of conservatism in a modern society was a guerrilla one. We can't jettison the party just because our chosen candidates didn't win or we nominated someone not within our ideological preference.

During times like these, just remember that the National Review supported Nixon.

Reagan, as close as the GOP has ever come to a dream candidate, couldn't crack 10% of the non-white vote against the most vulnerable Democrat opponent imaginable. I'm sorry, it's just not going to happen for you guys. You need to snap out of it.

You miss my meaning. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the Irish and the Italians and the Jews and the Germans came over, at first they always voted heavily Democratic, and eventually they assimilated into the general white American culture and began to vote Republican. Rates of intermarriage between Hispanics and white Americans are higher than they were between white Americans and some of these groups. My point being: eventually (most; those that appear physically black will probably not undergo this process) Hispanics will be considered white, and then they will vote just as Republican as white Americans do. This process is a gradual one that will take decades, but it'll surely happen unless we actively try to discourage it (such as by nominating Trump).

Reagan won by winning those that weren't considered minorities anymore, and the Republican Party will be able to do it again. (Also, this is maybe pedantic, but Reagan won 10% of the non-white vote in 1980 and 13% in 1984, so more than 10; also we've improved since then, since the process I described in the previous paragraph is already happening. Romney's historically poor performance with minorities was 18%; significantly more than Reagan).
