Well, the Castros are at least half-elvish, with that age expectancy.

If this indicates anything, it seems the Castro brothers still have many years to look forward to.

Part Three

Ramon Castro obit
He chose farming over politics. But the late Ramon Castro — older brother of Fidel and Raul — was a towering figure nonetheless to our guest.

If you click on 'listen to full episode' the show is broken down into parts, and this clip is at the start of part III.

Not for me.  Zsa Zsa and Fidel (I've had the other brother on 'em before too) are my long time non-diers.  I had Kirk Douglas on my list for a few years, but he seems to be doing fine so took him off this year.  I keep hoping somebody will murder Assad since the civil war started, but he keeps not getting shot or blown up...the bastard.  Same with Zawahiri.  Oh sh**t, Kirk is still on my list.  Oh well.  Looks like I added Glen Campbell, Joey Feek and Malcolm Young this year.

The castros have managed to transform Cuba from a country controlled by the elite in a backwards-agricultural state, to one of the best countries in terms of human development. Castro's have expanded healthcare, education, housing and food to the population, as well as restrict prostitution, for the moral-well being of Cuba. Cuba has one of the best universities and doctors as well as universal literacy rates. Crime is low, and poverty is one of lowest in the whole of Latin America. Castro has provided welfare and social services to the poor and downtrodden, make Cuba a powerful country in International Politics, stand the might and imperialism of the US, as well as be the sources of leftist revolutions, for such a small country. Castro has managed to bring Cuban nationalism and social patriotism withholding against the will of the US, giving money and control of land to the farmers, giving welfare to the poor, and stop it from being a banana-capitalist oligarchy.

I know a few, the last one was at a party in January, nice guy, he came to Chile a year ago to work (he returned to Cuba because his life was better and cheaper there). I asked about the Castros, and he said that he didn't like Raul too much, but he told me that is not bad there (except for the technology, which sucks). A friend of mine whose father is a general officer (in Chile those people are very right wing for obvious reasons) started talking crap about the castros and how they oppress cubans and the cuban economy, etc. The cuban guy got angry and they argued for a while (in friendly terms). Also, a friend of my brother is cuban born from a chilean father and cuban mother (he has a funny story actually, his grandfather is chinese and came to Cuba escaping from the communists) and he goes to cuba every summer.

The point is a lot of cubans like the Castros and how the things work in the country. Is a dictatorship, yes, but there are many other countries with worse governments which treat their people like garbage, and many of these countries are US allies. I have never understood the obsession of some people with Cuba when he see so many countries with worse  human right records.

Yes, of the remaining Communist one party states, Cuba is definitely the most benign. Not exactly a ringing endorsement given the opponents, but it still makes the razor focus on Cuba weird (as opposed to , say, TPP signee Vietnam).

Yeah, it's actually kind of odd, considering that the US fought a devastating war against Vietnam, but we're buddies with them now. Why are they less of an enemy than Cuba, against which we had one failed invasion?
