i've seen literally two black people in my town (population 5000-odd)

one (an american vietnam vet) is our neighbour and we have dinner together sometimes and talk somewhat regularly. the other is a lady who works at the bakery. she's also really friendly but i don't really know her at all

I live in NW Indiana, so obviously. Some are from high school I see on breaks, some are from my university, but most are either employees or volunteers where I work or kids we help.


The number goes up even more when you factor in friends who are half-black.

Also, my best friend in high school was Black. We're still friends on Facebook but mostly have nothing in common anymore.

I just don't have cultural context to judge how I will behave towards such person. I don't say anything about some discrimination, just socially-awkward situations.

I don't think Poland being a relatively homogeneous country is a problem here. It may of course depend on particular place. The problem may be you'd worry too much about behaving in appropriate way which would make thinks awkward. Well, it's understandable feeling, if you had no contact with a Black person before, but it's more of a psychological barrier. As the previous poster said, it's easier than you'd think.

I have three black friends who I'd say I consider myself close too, and at least eight when it comes to people that I hang out with/socialize with on a regular basis, even if we still don't know each other all that well.

Yes. My hometown is plurality black, my neighborhood is majority black, my high school was 2/3 black. If the Yerpeeuns here ever want to meet a real, live black people, we have plenty in the South.
