Caucuses begin at 11am local time, which is 2pm Eastern.  That’s when the networks will release their entrance poll.  The real results should start trickling in a little later.

Does anyone know if people who are at work get time off to caucus at 11am local time ?

On the other hand, 11am on a Saturday should be good for student turnout.

This will also be a test for Overtime Politics. They say that they can get their numbers in "within 90-120 seconds of state officials announcing them." We'll see if they're able to do this. Someone can watch the AP/CNN threads (or any others that are faster) and see if Overtime is able to beat them or if they're just copying some other groups numbers. If that is so, and there is an error, we can easily tell.

(Posting and identical post over on the South Carolina thread.)

Thanks for posting! I read that the viability threshold is 15%, but it says here that that threshold is decided at the beginning of the day. Do we know if that threshold is 15%? I assume it must be standard across all precincts (or follow the Iowa model where the smaller the precinct, the higher the threshold for very small precincts).

Some businesses might do that, but there is no law about it. Voting is typically on your own time in the US.

Until when can people vote? Would it be possible for Orthodox Jews to vote after shabbat?

IIRC the Nevada GOP did a special caucus for Orthodox Jews in 2012, I don't think Dems do that though.

For the GOP it isn't a problem this time, since they do it on February 23, but I see there isn't any possibility for Orthodox Jewish Dems to vote this time again. Which is bad.

Orthodox Jews shouldn't be Dems anyway, so I don't feel too bad for them, but still a dick move on the part of the Dems.

Not many, but that seems irrelevant. The Netherlands doesn't have many Orthodox Jews. Still, that's why we don't vote on Fridays and Saturdays.

Apparently there were 76,300 Jews in Nevada as of 2014.  That's nothing to sneeze at.

Didn't expect that, but indeed. Few of them will be Orthodox, but still I don't understand why the Dems don't organize something in order for them to be able to vote.

I would say over 90% of Orthodox Jews in the US are Republicans, so I highly doubt there would be much Orthodox participation in the evening caucus.

Not true (sadly). It's much more equal.

I wonder if the news orgs will report the Nevada caucus? They all seem preoccupied with the coverage of Justice Scalia's funeral

Don't most Orthodox Jews live in the Northeast?

But if there are 76,300 Jews in Nevada we have to consider that:

1. Many are under 18 and thus cannot vote.
2. Some will just not be interested in voting.
3. Most will not be Orthodox
4: Most who are Orthodox will be Republican

So we're dealing with a very small number of people.  Of course, the Democrats absolutely should allow for early voting for them, but they just won't.  Muslims should also be allowed early voting if a primary or caucus is on Friday.  And if they ever have voting on Sunday I'd hope that Christians who don't believe in voting on Sundays (like myself) would be able to vote early.

For some reason, the Nevada caucuses always seem to be given less coverage than Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina.

I agree, which is why the Netherlands doesn't vote on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. It's not problem if we would, but then people should be allowed to vote early. The argument was never about the number -- indeed, the number of Orthodox Jewish Democrats in Nevada will likely be low... but that doesn't really matter, because this is about a principle: being as inclusive as possible.

It's because everybody West of the Mississippi barring like California are treated like second class citizens in this country.

I don't know, but they've set up 6 at-large caucus locations on the Las Vegas Strip for shift workers who can't make it back to their home precinct in time. I believe they did the same in 2008.
