What if somehow Reagan and RFK had clinched the 1968 nominations?

I recently saw the famous television discussion between them from 1967 over student unrests and the Vietnam War (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvF30YEM6S8). I think such a contest would have been very very interesting in 1968.

RFK wins, but Wallace does better in the South. So probably this:

The country wasn't ready for Reagan in 1968 (too similar to Goldwater).

Kennedy/Muskie: 319 (45%)
Reagan/Rockefeller: 155 (39%)
Wallace/LeMay: 64 (15%)

RFK wins. America is not ready for Reagan, who was considered a radical right winger in that time. As a consequence, The GOP never nominates a hardcore conservative.

Senator Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY)/Governor Terry E. Sanford (D-NC): 366 EV. (53.04%)
Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/Former Senator Kenneth Keating (R-NY): 172 EV. (45.69%)

Why do so many think there would have been a third pary ticket? I think Reagan would have done very well in the south, just like Goldwater did in '64.

Reagan wins, LBJ sits on his hands, as do Connally, Ellington and the Southern conservatives. Any scenario where RFK gets the bosses, some of whom weren't on speaking terms with him IRL, to switch will be nastier than RL's DNC.

Because Wallace's '68 run was basically an f*** you to the Democratic Establishment for taking an avowed civil rights supporter as their party line. It would have happened no matter who was the Republican.

In such a scenario, Reagan would have cut into Wallace's southern support. However, RFK remains victorious anyway.
