It's going through the same things that gay legislation went through the 2000s.  The conservatives lead on the issue and pass all sorts of discriminatory laws... Then public perception changes and those laws are repealed or overturned.

South Dakota is not a hellhole. I like it because of its anti-Columbus Day stance, and this doesn't change that opinion.

What is wrong with this law? Is there something hidden in it not mentioned in the article?
It merely says that it prevents people from using the opposite sex bathroom. That seems perfectly reasonable, although I would have figured this was already standard practice. For those who feel uncomfortable with their birth sex, it said they could even submit a request to have separate accommodations.

If you oppose this law, why should we have separate sex bathrooms or locker rooms or showers at all? I cannot see any reason to oppose it.

Not to diminish the difficulty that those who don't identify with their birth sex go through, but this issue actually directly impacts other people. The most reasonable position is to have single occupancy shower/toilets available for use as needed.

As somebody who has actually been to South Dakota, I can confirm that even disregarding any political views, it's still a hellhole.

If this is the most pressing issue facing South Dakota right now, I'm impressed. I thought they were hurting from the low oil prices...

Most normal people are opposed to the idea of checking student's genitals before they walk in to a toilet, perv.

I think it's North Dakota with the oil. South Dakota just has that tacky mountain.

Don't conservatives like to harp on about letting parents have the ultimate say in what happens to their children?

What about the parent's right to be able to say "no, I don't want these 60 year old strangers looking at my child's junk, why is this even a thing?"

Even if you ideologically support it, you have to admit there's a bit of a roadblock that manifests itself in the fact that nobody will take this proposed job.

What job are you talking about?

So it is okay to expose elementary, middle school, and high school girls to the opposite sex in shower and locker rooms? It is okay to make all those students uncomfortable and invade their privacy when there is a perfectly reasonable alternative (single occupancy bathrooms)?

Sure you might have some argument if there were no options for the individual at all. Obviously they could feel uncomfortable in the rest room of the sex they don't identify with. But when reasonable accommodations are offered (single occupancy bathrooms), what is the problem with the bill?

I cannot really understand the logic of the people opposed to this bill. Explain it to me.

The job of verifying the gender of every single person entering the restroom. Would you take that job? Would anybody you know take that job?

Well, how else are you supposed to verify the gender of every single person that walks into a restroom? I'd love to hear your ideas.

Shouldn't it be obvious? Unless they have undergone hormone treatment since they were little anyway...

I don't think anyone is suggesting posting some guard at the bathrooms though. It is more of a written policy and if someone happens to violate it then there would be consequences.

Unisex bathrooms. One of the few instances when the moderate hero position is the best.

Because people generally want to identify with their gender, not their sex.
