If Nelson Rockefeller had remained on the ticket with Gerald Ford in 1976, would the election have gone the same way?

Ford might win Ohio and Wisconsin, but he probably loses Oklahoma, Virginia, and New Mexico without Dole.

Why is Ford doing so much better than he actually did?

The GOP's turn right is stalled. In the anti-Nixon mood of the time, Ford picks up OH and HI to earn 270 EVs while still losing the PV 49.5%-48.5%. One faithless WA elector votes for Reagan as in real life, the election gets thrown to the House, and Carter wins. In the reform minded atmosphere of the time, the EC is abolished in favor of national PV.
