Republican Party

States in Play:  Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine

Other: Puerto Rico

After a very sweeping Super Tuesday for Senator Barry Goldwater, many pundits and media outlets are asking the question: Why is anyone else still running? And do they think they can beat the fire-brand Senator? When this was asked to Governor Mitt Romney at a rally in Portland, ME he responded in kind: "I'll tell you why? It started with one time when my Daddy [he was Governor of Michigan] was giving me a good allowance and I asked him, 'Why are you voting for Johnson?' and he told me 'Son, it is because I am a Republican, I am in the Party of Lincoln and Lincoln freed the slaves, and because I have worked with many black people...I guess Goldwater just hasn't since he's in Arizona, perhaps there's something in the water down there. The point is, he's extreme and exclusive when he should be reasonable and inclusive'. I may not have much chance anymore [besides Utah], but maybe I can stop him short a few delegates". Tom Dewey said something about ideas and not killing them with guns, and how the future won't be ahead. And John Fremont echoed much of what Romney said, but also was optimistic about winning by taking the West. All three of them questioned John McCain's endorsement choice.

With that aside, the select primaries and caucuses are that of Kansas, Maine, Louisiana, Puerto Rico and Kentucky.

Maine is a state that is being heavily contested by Romney, Fremont, and Dewey...even though Governor LePage endorsed Goldwater. Louisiana and Kentucky are expected to go to Goldwater and Kansas is being battled for by Goldwater and Fremont in a situation not too different from Alaska a few days before.

Democratic Party

States in Play: Louisiana, Nebraska, Kansas, Maine,

Other: Democrats Abroad (cont.)

After a very competitive Super Tuesday, which resulted in no drop-outs despite rumors flying earlier of Humphrey doing exactly that, only Louisiana, Nebraska, Kansas, and Maine are in play. Humphrey hopes to make the rounds in Louisiana and Maine, the latter with overwhelming support and the former by a plurality, although perhaps condemning the refusal to allow Syrian refugees was not such a good idea for winning Louisiana. Representative Bryan also hopes to gain Louisiana, as well as Kansas and his home state of Nebraska by campaigning mostly on raising the minimum wage and condemning Humphrey's remarks as hurtful to the workers. In an unusual move, Governor Tilden actually praised Humphrey's remarks and adding that the Middle East is war-torn and the country has gotten itself into a mess, therefore it is the least that can be done. He hopes to do respectably in Maine and Louisiana, while mostly sticking to Omaha and Kansas City in the other two states.

McGovern also praised Humphrey for his remarks, but also added that the U.S. should let Europe lead the war on ISIS.

Halfway through the proceedings here is what appears to be happening.

GOP:

Barry Goldwater (35%)
John C. Fremont (25%)
Tom Dewey (20%)
Mitt Romney (20%)

Dems:

George McGovern (46.15%)
William Jennings Bryan (23.07%)
Samuel Tilden (15.38%)
Hubert Humphrey (15.38%)

And the polls have now closed.

Republican Party

PUERTO RICO: John C. Fremont

Barry Goldwater (41.66%)
John C. Fremont (25%)
Tom Dewey (16.66%)
Mitt Romney (16.66%)

In a surprise to no one, Goldwater completely dominated all the races today. He won Kentucky and Louisiana by probably twice the number of delegates the others could muster combined, comfortably defeated Fremont in Kansas, and even almost won Maine thanks to a three way split for the center by Romney, Dewey, and Fremont...but Fremont ultimately did manage to come out on top. The only real highlight of this cycle of campaigning was Governor LePage's rather bizarre endorsement of Goldwater. It was rumored that as soon as campaigning was over, Goldwater asked, "Is it wrong to feel shamed by an endorsement?".

Also, Puerto Rico favored Fremont heavily.

Democratic Party

AMERICAN SAMOA: Hubert Humphrey
DEMOCRATS ABROAD: George McGovern

George S. McGovern (40%)
William Jennings Bryan (26.66%)
Samuel Tilden (20%)
Hubert Humphrey (13.33%)

Despite a strong advantage for the firebrand William Jennings Bryan, who had the luck of mostly dealing with populist, down-to-earth, God-fearing states that would see the others as completely out touch. But McGovern managed to come back strong on the day itself by taking Maine away from Humphrey, managing to land the endorsements of Greg Orman and Paul Davis which some say is what tipped the scales to him despite Bryan's fierce campaigning. Even in Nebraska he did well, though the state still went to Bryan. Only in Louisiana did things look grim, with Humphrey taking New Orleans, Tilden taking up Lafayette, and Bryan easily taking the rest of the state. He also ended up defeating Humphrey with absentee Democrats
