The news that just broke eliminated his chances of winning the primary.

Though it probably doesn't help his chances, I don't think he was a first tier candidate anyway.  In any case, it's far from certain to knock him out - most people seem to have notoriously short memories for this sort of thing.

Possible, there is the electability factor.  Some primary voters will vote for the candidate most likely to win.

The Dems agreed to let the three most conservative Bush appointments get an up or down vote, and promised not to filibuster Supreme Court appointments except in "extraordinary" circumstances. But they've already shattered their credibility, and if they try to call originalists 'extraordinary,' I doubt Frist will have any trouble coming up with the votes to go nuclear.

In other words, they buckled in because they saw that Reps have the votes to go nuclear? How does that hurt Frist, successfully bullying through Bush's extremist choices? Without going nuclear? Sounds like a victory for him.

Media spin is 'compromise.' In truth, it's a short-term victory, though we'll still have to see if the Dems keep their word on Supreme Court appointments. If they don't, nuclear warfare it is, I guess.

You've got it all wrong.  The 7 GOP Senators pretty much gave Reid everything he wanted in his original deal.  The deal will allow for an up or down vote on 3 of the original10 nominees(2 have withdrawn), and withold the filibuster on the rest, except for extroardinary circumstances.  However, extroardinary isn't defined, and since the Dems have labelled ALL of the nominees extremists, there is little doubt that we'll see the filibuster again soon.  It also calls for Bush to submit his list of future nominees to the Senate's gang of 14 for approval, before they can be moved forward.  It's a TOTAL usurpation of Presidential power as defined in the Constitution, but not unexpected from someone like McCain.  Snowe and Collins are simply non-entities, so there position isn't unexpected.  As for Warner, Graham, and De Wine, I can't explain why they did this.

Graham's future in the party is over.  McCain can kiss any chance of the nomination goodbye, at least the GOP nomination.

Frist is (thankfully) out--how can he control terrorism if he can't even control McCain.

Allen is in--the GOP base, disgusted as they are with all senate Republicans, actually like Allen more and more.

I'm not so sure about Frist being out.  This deal only postpones the battle until a spot on the Supreme Court opens up.  If Frist can pull a victory out of that one, or even a draw, he will still have a shot at the nomination.

Interesting to see the big division in GOP opinion about who won

and Democrats are just as divided, if DU is of any indication:

they're split down the middle.
