In 1958, Governor of California Goodwin Knight and US Senator William Knowland tried to switch their offices. Much of that happened to the dissatisfition of the the governor, who wanted to stay in Sacramento because he was actually popular. As it turned out, the so called "big switch" was unpopular with voters and both lost, what gave Vice President Nixon control of the CA GOP. Knowland was massively defeated on the gubernatorial ballot by Democrat Pat Brown (59-40%).

If Goodwin Knight had persisted to run for governor again (and I think he would have won the Republican primary), had he been reelected again?

Possibly, and Contra Costa would probably be the tilting point to whoever wins.

Knowland would've probably been defeated in the Senate anyway.

I think he would have been reelected by a margin of 50% to 48% or so. Knowland would have been defeated for the Senate or lost the primary against Gov. Knight.

In California, the gov. and lt.gov. are elected separately and not as running mates. Wink
