We're not talking if you'd LIKE to, or have ever thought about it -- I want to know people who's career goals are truly to become politicians, and aspire to political office.

For those who answer yes, what makes you think you could be elected, perhaps in a district that doesn't completely share your ideology?

Yes. Senator of the North East region of the Fantasy election board. Smiley

However, other than that, No.

That's pretty much how it is in the US, too. Either that or [failed/successful] businessmen.

I would like to hold political office and am considering it.  I could get elected where I live to the house of representatives but by time I can run the districts would be changed and I could be back in a liberal district again

I will almost certainly go into politics somehow.  I personally would love to run for some kind of office, but I don't know where I'll be in another ten years or so.

I will run for Mayor of Davenport, and then, perhaps, Governor of Iowa. I don't know if Iowa will accept my conservative policies.

You could go around and kill people for fun, too, like the guy in Dean Koontz's "Intensity."

You'd have to move to Oregon, though.

For all of you now who want to become politicians, answer honestly:

Do you have the oratory skills necessary to become a politician?

Have you taken any part in your school's forensics club/team?

Can you CONNECT with voters of all ages, and not just those of your political ideology?

If you are an extremeist, can you play yourself off as a moderate?

Why should you get the job when there's probably someone more qualified than you also running?

PBrunsel,

The economy in Iowa is terrible. Governor Vilsak is taxing us untill we bleed.

With a little practice I'm sure I could have the oratory skills necessary.

No, my school doesn't have a forensics club or team.  I go to an art high school. Smiley

I think I can connect with voters of all ages.  I've always had success with my more liberal classmates.

I'm not really sure if I'm an extremist or not.  If I am, I think I'm in tune enough with popular opinion to know what issues not to touch.

I am a pretty good orator, I am in debate, I am on the Student Council, I know history. My only problem is my extreme conservatism and state's rights. I think mnay of my opinions will appeal to Iowan farmers.

My answer is a "maybe".   Some folks have encouraged me to think about it but there really isn't a good opening for me right now.   I'm much more invested in getting my fellow Republicans elected to office and haven't considered myself to be a potential candidate until I have developed more education, knowledge, experience, and resources to be able to be an effective representative for my party and my district.

I've got some awesome friends who could recruit a lot of volunteers... but my one big problem would be raising money.

I will answer of's voter guide Smiley

"Do you have the oratory skills necessary to become a politician?"

In Tennessee, this is not a requirement. Smiley

"Have you taken any part in your school's forensics club/team?"

My high school didn't have a forensics team but I was the captain of the academic team!  (YAY Academic teams!)

"Can you CONNECT with voters of all ages, and not just those of your political ideology?"

I had a John Birch society member who thinks Bill Frist is a liberal say that we need more people like me in politics.  I've had a liberal African-American NAACP leader tell me that I was the first person who ever presented a coherent reason to her for blacks to be involved in the Republican Party.  I've got to work on StevenNick though, I haven't gotten through to him yet Smiley

"If you are an extremeist, can you play yourself off as a moderate?"

The real question is:  As a moderate, could I play myself off as an extremist.

"Why should you get the job when there's probably someone more qualified than you also running?"

Because if I ever were elected, I would work until my hands drew blood to represent my constituents who have put their faith and trust in me to the best of my ability.

how do you get revenue if you cut taxes?  Or do you cut services proportionate to the tax cuts?  When you talk about cutting services, bam!, there goes your support among some demographic.  It gets pretty complicated pretty quickly.  Just ask Howard Dean.

I have a feeling that most of our differences are due to miscommunication more than anything else.  I bet we agree on much more than either of us would imagine.

Hmm, some interesting responses so far. I think you'd do well, Don.

Next big issue:

It is a well-known fact that being in politics (especially federal level) requires you to sacrifice some of your ethics to advance, and in some cases, even get the support necessary to re-election. Could you actually sacrifice your personal code of ethics in order to succeed as a politician?

I've get plenty more questions, don't worry. Going to bed now though.

HtmlDon, StevenNick, PBrunsel,
I hope you don't feel this way yet.  I hope we still live in a land where you could be honest, like Orrin Hatch or Jimmy Carter, and still get elected.

I can't imagine a situation in which I'd need to.  If my ethics get in the way of my re-election, I'll happily lose re-election.  Next question.

Yes I have oratory skills, do Debating at my school and am future chairman of the society most probably when I am in my final year.

I can connect with most people, as has been shown here.

I am not an extremist.

Because I will give the people what they want Smiley.
