On the Republican side, Roosevelt's insurgent candidacy collapsed in the leadup to the Iowa caucuses, with millions of dollars in independent attack ads scolding the progressive's support for socialized medicine and nation building. Nevertheless, the field was more scattered than ever, with conservative favorite Reagan achieving an unexpected if narrow victory, Eisenhower coming in a close second, and underdogs Coolidge, Ford, and Grant earning surprisingly high support as well. As New England's favorite son, Coolidge is expected to ride his momentum into a strong performance in New Hampshire. However, Arthur's withdrawal and endorsement of his mentor Grant may prove to be a wildcard in this wide-open race.

For the Democrat's, Cleveland's surprising Iowa win delivered an immense blow to the progressive wing of the party, which feels the need to consolidate the field for a better chance. Kennedy, feeling that his sixth-place finish was inadequate to compete, announced the need to pass the torch to a new generation of Americans, endorsing Obama. Carter, who performed well in Iowa, feels that he can serve as a potential bridge between the progressive and conservative factions.

Obama this time, just to shake things up...though I really hope Carter stays in.

Voted Ike, but I'd love to see Ford do well (pro-Michigan bias.)

Sticking with Truman, but I'd be fine with Obama as well. Cleveland has as much a place in the Democratic race as Roosevelt did in the GOP race.

Results

Republicans:
Ronald Reagan 37%
Calvin Coolidge 24%
Dwight Eisenhower 15%
Ulysses Grant 14%
Gerald Ford 10%

Democrats:
Barack Obama 48%
Harry Truman 23%
Grover Cleveland 15%
Jimmy Carter 14%

Gerald Ford withdrew from the race as a result of his dismal showing. Reagan and Obama's decisive wins give them considerable momentum going into the South Carolina primary.
