A New America Series - 1952 Presidential Election

Embattled President John Bricker faced a tough primary challenge from Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, but upon agreeing to a more forceful military agenda in his second term, he won over the on the fence hawks of his party and became the nominee, picking Governor Douglas MacArthur, the first Republican Governor of Arkansas since Reconstruction, to be his Vice Presidential pick. This was obviously a move to spite moderates, who are bolting the party and have their endorsements split between the moderate Dwight Eisenhower and the very liberal Wayne Morse.

Despite his tactics on communism being rather unpopular, Bricker is doubling down and even reaching a branch toward the military, hoping that being forceful against Eisenhower will make him more successful. Bricker is also campaigning on an economy in decent shape, his popular tax cuts, anti-civil rights, and his more popular running mate (who faced off against Bricker in 1948 and lost because the moderate wing backed Bricker, strangely enough). Bricker is running what is being considered the most conservative campaign for President in history thus far.

Wayne Morse, on the other hand, is running a very liberal campaign. He wants to roll back the reforms that Taft-Bricker put together, raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for a huge healthcare package, and stay out of foreign interventions all together. He has not taken on any anti-communist rhetoric, in fact, he has praised Stalin in a weird way, calling him a "strong leader". This has not played well with the American public, or so we think. Also running with him is Senator Glen Taylor, who is among the most liberal members of congress ever.

And in the center of it all is General Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower is running as a center-left moderate who is pro-tax cut, anti-Taft-Bricker, and mostly focused on mild reforms such as growing education, science, anti-corruption measures and being generally anti-communist. Eisenhower has come out against Bricker's style and rhetoric, and plans to rid his administration of the kind of Red baiting that has symbolized Bricker's administration and is running as a happy candidate like he did in real life, contrasting Bricker's drab demeanor. Eisenhower is an interventionist, and is planning a swift and easy operation in Korea.

2 Days, let's go!

Might as well Bricker.

Looks like I am not the only one with Kefauver as the Dem VP nominee in 1952.

I was considering Will Rogers Jr., but an Eisenhower win probably requires the South, which with Bricker/MacArthur is probably in play.

Honestly, I'm just sick of seeing Eisenhower as president in these timelines. And I'm not voting for Bricker, so Morse it is.

I voted for Bricker because of his charming, energetic, and engaging personality. Eisenhower is a military man who cannot understand the American citizen's way of life, and Morse is out of touch with American values.

We're going to get a Bricker presidency due to the Left-Wing split, aren't we. Sigh*

We'll find out! I suspect there are atleast a couple of Republicans going with Ike, which potentially could make up for some loss of support to Wayne Morse.
