I don't support bans, but obviously if people need to remove them for security reasons, or confirming their identity and whatnot, they should have to comply.
Pretty much.

Banning them for being oppressive is silly because clothing should be a choice and removing that choice is oppressive. And if some women are forced to wear them the government needs to go after the women's family and not the women.

I don't support bans but I don't like the way Western liberals fetishize face coverings as progressive and wonderful.

Yeah, this.

I've been in the South too long, for a second I thought Banning Face Veils was the name of some obscure politician.

Yeah, this.

I'm convinced that it's to be the opposite of conservatives. Both sides take positions solely for opposition against the other side.

Massive FD and would very strongly support here.

This seems out of character for you.

Not really. I definitely view such things as a security risk, but I also view them as totally, completely incompatible with behavior in a free, industrialized society. It's very black-and-white to me.

Really, people? 40% of you support banning an article of clothing? I thought I was supposed to be the Islamophobic Neocon. Tongue

What's the security argument here?  That they might be a wanted criminal in disguise?

It's amazing how many people here are suddenly feminists when it means being racist.

HD.

The idea of banning this offends me on a personal level. I mean hypothetically if I wanted to cover my face, I feel I should be entitled to. That entitlement extends to Muslim women.

There is no reasonable expectation of privacy in public.  The courts have long confirmed this.  Therefore, we don't have the right to cover our faces in public.

I question how free a society is if it's going to be policing clothing like the Saudi morality police.

Your courts aren't my courts, so...

...also what DC said is precisely my point. A free society would not be policing what articles of clothing people choose to wear.

In the interest of safety free societies already do that all the time.

It would be interesting to see it by full partisan vote (Socialist, Green, Constitution, etc). I suspect there is a lot of cross-voting on both  sides.

I think clothing is speech and it can be part of practicing your religion.  The US government can't ban people from wearing an article of clothing.  And, they shouldn't.

The question is what happens when people demand special religious protection in employment, education  or public life.  In my opinion, a job that require a uniform doesn't need to exempt all religious clothing.  Abercrombie and Fitch doesn't have to allow their employees wear Hasidic Jew or Muslim garb.  In general, I wouldn't hire someone who wears a face veil because it prevents normal human interaction.  Or in school, a dress code should ban the niqab, while allowing things like a headscarf.  That's the line I would draw.

I oppose this policy but fail to see how it's "racist."

Trump and I will make 2 exceptions.  You can cover your face if the weather 10 degrees or below, or if its Halloween. NO OTHER EXCEPTIONS
