A disastrous and grotesque failure. Just a petty, paranoid bastard who half-arsed everything and almost bankrupted the country. Hus reputation is saved by having some good advisors and courtesans, when he wasn't killing them at least.

Tbf the Anglican Church before his son got hold of it was about as culturally Catholic as you're going to get outside of Rome itself. He wasn't exactly Martin Luther.

I'm just mocking one of BRTD's recent(?) obsessions in his quest to slay the beast of Rome.

In seriousness, I don't care about matters of theology, but to the extent I take sides in the British Isles' historical religious controversies, I pretty much see it as 1: High-church Anglicans, 2: Catholics, 3 and up: Protestant sects in increasing order of extremism.

Founder of High Anglicanism, so HP. He would have remained Catholic had the Pope obliged him.

HP for this reason and CrabCake's reason, but not any of the other reasons posted in this thread.

Literal human filth and trash. Add to what's been mentioned that he ordered Anne Askew tortured and burned for political reasons. He was trying to dig up dirt on the current queen, of course.

Scum.

Trying to make opposition to him about Catholicism is pretty absurd, even if you're a Catholic that's like saying the Anschluss is the worst thing Hitler ever did.

Obviously an HP, but very fascinating.  My mom is obsessed with his story, so that little jingle about his wives brought back some memories.

I think because we're so used to him as a part of our past (and one told very early as well) we forget quite how utterly, utterly bats crazy he was. Like his behavior was not... normal... even for the period: this man was not an eccentric ruler who happened to live during a brutal period, but something else entirely. The remarks Christina of Denmark supposedly made when flat out refusing to marry him - "If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England's disposal" - are a pretty clear indication of how he was regarded internationally...
