A late president of our northern neighbor once said something that I think sums up this election very well:
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out
how the strong man stumbles or how the doer of deeds could have
done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in
the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who
strives valiantly; who errs, and who comes up short again and again...
who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement,
and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.
As members of the first Government of our infant Republic, the Social Liberals have been constantly "in the arena." The Socialists, who have had the luxury of criticizing every failure of the government without being burdened with the responsibility of correcting them, have not. Under the leadership of Deputy PM Talleyrand and Speaker Barnes, we have won real victories for the people of South America, and if - as Mr. Roosevelt says - we have come up short of our highest ideals, we at least have worked to lead South America in the right direction. Anyone can criticize the status quo and claim that, if given power, he would do things better; it is a different proposition entirely to actually lead, with only your principles and the will of the people for guidance.
