Do you consider "Chinegro", a term used to describe someone of Asian and African ancestry, offensive?

Do I? no, first time I've heard it.  I'd assume actually Chinegros would though, but sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised.

(am I evil for laughing at "Chigger" and "blackanese" as related links at Urban Dictionary?  I don't look up race based words, well, ever so some of these are new to me.  Some are much less funny, like "Chimexican" and "chisizulu"....just don't flow.  The music teacher at the boy's school has "HEEBS" on his license plate, that always makes me laugh too.....his name is Heebner and his nickname is Heebs.  I had to do a double take the first time I saw the plate.)

No, I don't find it offensive, but it's not as hilarious as "Blaxican". Some of my American Jewish friends sometimes call me a "Dike", which is not only a common phenomenon both along Dutch coasts and in LGBT bars in Amsterdam, but also a composition of "Dutch" and "K*ke", and I find that quite funny - btw I can say this because I am this, so people who want to report this post can kindly fyck off Smiley People, especially white middle-class liberals in academia, need to grow a pair.

Admittedly, though, it depends on the person who makes the joke and I could very well imagine situations in which I would find it totally inappropriate for people to say "Chinegro" or "Dike". Jokes might be appropriate if people know you and you know they're okay, but they aren't appropriate if people don't know you. I try to apply my own standards to others: I consider the "happy merchant" meme very disrespectful, so I also respect people with an African background who don't like the meme featuring the kid with the basketball and the KFC bucket. It's all about being a normal and a social person who understands what's appropriate and what's not. But I can hardly take seriously people who are in a tizzy over a harmless composition on the internet not directed at someone in a personal way.

lmao xd

Never heard of it before, but I would wager it's probably not a good idea to say it on a college campus. Wink

It's extremely offensive.  I much prefer to use the term 'niental'.

So that's where the word "Blaxican" came from, I never knew.  "Blasian" is pretty common IRL.

Life was so much simpler on this forum when we were debating the offensiveness of the term "Alpha Jew".

This term makes far more sense and is less likely to be perceived as racist. If a person were offended by a word like "Blasian", I would guess they were the type of person who argued with everyone for not being treated like a special little snowflake.

"Chinegro" on the other hand equates all Asians with Chinese when they may be Japanese or Korean or some other nationality, which may be offensive, and it just sounds like a word that might be more likely to be misunderstood. So I voted yes in this poll.

Honestly I avoid using obscure new terms for mixed race individuals, of course if these new terms became widely used in a non-offensive way I of course will adopt them, but until then I think people may get offended if I use these terms, so I avoid them.

What does that mean?

Banned troll poster feeblepizza brought up the term out of nowhere, saying that it was like the “alpha male” in a group of Jewish people.  He said it was an inside joke among his friends, and people mocked him for it.  But now I google “alpha jew” and realize that other people have talked about it as well.

Marc Maron talks about "manly" Jews in his podcast all the time.  (not as much he talks about Lourne Michaels, but that's another story)  You've got your Dentist Jews, your accountant Jews, your funny Jews, you know, your various smart Jews...the chess grand champions, and such.  Then you've got your farmer/athlete/soldier/manly/"alpha" Jews.

I suspect it's more of a human thing than a Jew thing though.

I see. Well, it's a "debate" that has an important place in early modern Zionist thinking as well. "Old Jew" versus "new Jew", et cetera.

But when I look for it on the internet I see people are also using the concept differently, i.e. alpha Jews = Jews living up to anti-Semitic stereotypes. A rather intellectually lazy conceptualization, but what else could I expect from "the internet" Smiley

It's not up to me to determine whether the term is offensive. I'll reserve that job to the people who might actually be called that.
