I figured I'd make this thread, since it'll be a high profile battle and in the news for the next few months.

Whip List from the Hill.

Sen. Joe Manchin is "leaning strongly in support" of the Iran Deal.

My guess is it'll fail in the Senate by 1-3 votes. Can't see Schumer, Nelson or Menendez voting aye at the end of the day.

It needs a two thirds no vote to "fail" in this instance I think.

34 Senators and 145 Representatives are need for approval. It'll be an all Dem vote but it'll pretty easily be approved.

Why does it need so few votes to pass?

Congress will easily vote for disapproval of the deal, Obama will veto the disapproval, Congress will try for an override, and the override vote will in all likelihood fail. This means the deal will go though.

Supposedly Fienstein was the first Senator to side with the deal. I'm still in shock.

Feinstein was pretty supportive of the negotiations from the beginning, if I recall. She criticized Netanyahu for not offering any alternative, and said she did not favor further sanctions, since "the Iranian people deserve more."

The ABC and PPP polls gave their readers basic information about the deal in their question on supporting it while the CNN one didn't. Shows that the Neo-con artists only win by spreading misinformation.

Neo-cons hardly have a monopoly over low info voters, but in this case...yes. The less people know about the deal (and Iran in general for that matter), the more susceptible they will be to fear mongering from the right.

Is there a possibility of any Republican Senator supporting the deal?

Looking at the Hill's whip list, I'd say there's a chance Portman could come out in favor, but I wouldn't bet on it; it would basically end any chance of him being picked for VP.

Good think he's not going to be picked to be VP to begin with, then.

Nobody knows yet what is in those secret two side letters by the way. It all just gets curiouser and curiouser.

Adam Schiff (D-CA) is in favor, as is Anna Eshoo (D-CA). Kathleen Rice (D-NY) opposes the deal.
